Xiang Sun: Muse and Camera Obscura
As Muse whispers in the darkroom, the imprint of light takes shape.
HSBC Life invites you to embark on an inspiring artistic journey at Galaxy Resort Macau through Xiang Sun’s Muse & Camera Obscura and explore the artist's enduring search for the Muse and his attempt to recapture the magic of the fleeting moments that make life unique. At the heart of the exhibition is the Camera Obscura, a precursor to the modern camera and a powerful metaphor for the darkroom where images emerge from light and shadow. Through photography, moving image, sound, scent and tactile encounters, visitors are invited into a world where visual poetry unfolds across the senses.
Rarely seen in South China, the exhibition brings together a remarkable collection of original silver gelatin prints, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of photography's most revered analogue traditions. Spanning Sun's evolution from fashion photography in Paris to his renewed engagement with traditional darkroom craftsmanship, the works reflect a deep fascination with light, atmosphere and the traces left by time.
In 2024, Sun returned to Paris to study silver gelatin printing, creating new works using an 8×10 large-format camera and camera obscura methods. Each photograph is hand-printed through an irreversible chemical process, free from digital manipulation.
Complementing the photographs are art films, music, scent experiences and selected garments from the artist's personal archive, creating an immersive journey where visual poetry meets tactile discovery.

Xiang Sun
An artist, photographer and short film director, Xiang Sun employs a restrained yet poetic visual language to explore the boundaries between presence and absence. Following a period living in Paris, he was invited to create fashion documentary photography for Chanel, where he developed a distinctive artistic style that merges reality with illusion.
His photographic series Strange Days was shortlisted for the Jimei x Arles Discovery Award, while his short film The Moon and the Peacock further expanded his multidisciplinary creative practice.
In recent years, Sun has returned to Paris to study traditional silver gelatin photography and large-format 8×10 processes. Bridging European photographic heritage with Eastern aesthetic sensibilities, he continues to explore the materiality of the photographic image and its capacity to preserve the fleeting traces of time.
