Golden Fortunes: the Macau Debut of Zhu Bingren’s Copper Art
Experience the commanding beauty of metal shaped by a master’s hand. Galaxy Macau proudly presents the first-ever Macau showcase of Zhu Bingren—renowned sculptor and inheritor of China’s national intangible cultural heritage in copper carving.
Golden Fortunes: The Macau Debut of Zhu Bingren’s Copper Art unveils an awe-inspiring collection of 68 masterpieces, ushering in the Year of the Horse through luminous and deeply symbolic works in copper.
From ritual vessels used in grand ceremonies to architectural elements and everyday utensils, copper has shaped the course of human history. In China, it has long been revered as an auspicious metal, imbued with profound social, spiritual, and artistic significance. By reimagining traditional techniques through his pioneering approach, Zhu Bingren breathes new life into copper art—creating free-form sculptures from molten copper without the use of molds.
This spring, we invite you to GalaxyArt to discover the artistic splendor of Zhu Bingren’s extraordinary collection.
Exhibition highlights:
- Five Themed Series: This series includes “ Success at Hand (Year of the House Collection)”, “Year-End Elegance (Qīng Gòng Series)” and “State Gifts and Global Blessings (National Gift Series)”—blending eight copper carving techniques that have been recognized as China’s national intangible cultural heritage. Exquisite works such as “Golden Bai Cai (Cabbage)”, “Golden Pine, Gracious Host” and “Eight Steeds of Qianlong – Chasing the Sun” convey auspicious New Year blessings.
- Year of the Horse Collection: Showcasing a total of 38 horses in a variety of artforms ranging from bronze paintings to sculptural pieces. The ornamental aesthetics of the Tang dynasty, Western realism, and contemporary insights come together in splendid harmony.
- Qīng Gòng Series: A joint exhibition by Zhu Bingren and his son Zhu Junmin. Zhu Junmin’s bonsai artworks, inspired by treasured Chinese ornaments and decorations, surround Zhu Bingren’s monumental copper peacock sculpture. This series is an evocative dialogue between father and son, and a thoughtful display of magnificence.
- National Gift Series: This series includes works that have been presented by China as national gifts. Highlight pieces include “Auspicious Lotus Vase” which combines filigree and enamel techniques.
- Macau’s Molten Light (Molten Copper Series): Molten copper, unbound by molds, reveals the natural textures of the metal. Poetic, dynamic and boundary-breaking, works such as “Fisherman’s Song in the Rain”, “Sail” and “Chinese Red, Chinese Dragon” are the perfect metaphor for Macau as a cultural melting pot.
- The Eight Heavenly Horses: A giant 6-meter copper painting replicating the masterpiece of Italian missionary and painter Castiglione. The decorative technique of enameling blends Eastern and Western charm and conjures up the unbridled magnificence of the legendary steeds depicted by Castiglione in his famous painting centuries ago.
