Traditional peat smoke still characterised The Macallan, while major technological breakthroughs elsewhere saw the release of Charlie Chaplin’s first ‘talkie’ movie, ‘Modern Times’, and Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Pablo Picasso completed his famous painting, ‘Guernica’, and, in the USA, John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, was published.

The US Census Bureau introduced the first commercial computer, UNIVAC 1. JD Salinger published his novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’, which quickly became a classic. Marlon Brando famously put on a white T-shirt and starred in the film version of Tennessee Williams’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. The US automobile manufacturer, the Chrysler Corporation, introduced the first power steering.

The first boreholes are sunk at The Macallan Estate (drive piles, new development on the Estate), and microwaves and VCRs enter the consumer market for the first time. The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age in the US from 21 to 18. Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn received the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the environmental campaign group, Greenpeace, was founded in Vancouver, Canada.
